Does anyone have any additional information about "national curricular standards"?

I know that the National Science Education Standards (NSES) were the result of a collaboration of many individuals and were funded by the NSF, the U.S. Dept. of Education, NASA, NIH, the National Academy of Science, as well as by various charitable foundations.

Do the national standards simply serve as a guideline for what each state decides should be taught in their schools? Are there national standards for subjects other than the sciences?

Reed, Thanks for the comment! I will be moving to Georgia at the end of this month and am a very disheartened about the Deparment of Education's proposed science curriculum. Having earned a Ph.D. in Genetics, it is hard for me to stomach the fact that the Georgia's Department of Education does not require schools to cover certain topics that are fundamental to the understanding of living systems!

It is not over yet. Cox's promise to use the term "evolution" hides the fact that the standards still gut the science of modern biology. In fact, Cox hasn't even admitted that anything is missing beyond "the one word."
